Talking point: Created in 2020, the 20-member board prioritizes “cases that have the potential to affect lots of users around the world, are of critical importance to public discourse or raise important questions about Facebook’s policies.” The first cases heard by the board involve alleged transgressions of Facebook’s rules against hate speech; adult nudity and sexual activity; dangerous individuals and organizations; and violence and incitement. A five-member panel of board members will determine in the coming days whether Trump’s musings before the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill had violated the company’s community standards and values. The board’s decision will be binding, and Trump will continue to be locked out of Facebook and Instagram until its ruling.
