Talking point: Verizon Media will receive a minority stake in BuzzFeed, in which it will also make an undisclosed cash investment. The two outlets will syndicate content and explore advertising opportunities together. BuzzFeed founder and CEO Jonah Peretti will run the combined company. He said BuzzFeed executives will review HuffPost’s business before making significant moves like layoffs or new hires. The companies did not immediately respond to The Logic’s request for comment about what the deal means for HuffPost’s Canadian operations. In a New York Times article exactly two years ago, Peretti had floated the idea of a merger with BuzzFeed’s rivals as a way to revive its fortunes. Apparently the idea to involve HuffPost started earlier this year at the annual CES show, when Peretti met with Verizon Media’s CEO, and talks accelerated later this year. It’s another in a series of recent media mergers, including Vice Media and Refinery29, and Vox Media and New York Media.
