Talking point: The report, released Tuesday, concluded that Apple, Google, Facebook and Amazon have engaged in anti-competitive conduct for years and said they should be broken up. Investors were largely unmoved by the report and its recommendations—all of the companies’ stocks except Facebook’s rose in Wednesday trading, with Amazon up over three per cent. Prior to the report’s release, some Republican lawmakers signalled they wouldn’t support all the recommendations. There is bipartisan support on some issues, like increased power for government antitrust regulators. That may not matter if Democrats retake the Senate. Even if they don’t, the House report also offers fresh details of alleged wrongdoing on topics into which various law enforcement entities around the world, including in Canada, are looking. For example, the report alleges Amazon has monopoly power over online sellers in the U.S. The firm is facing class-action lawsuits and a Competition Bureau investigation on similar issues in Canada.
