It’s been a challenging half-decade for business.

A month into the COVID-19 pandemic, Kenneth Whyte penned a column in The Logic that looked at how the 1929 stock market crash led to the Great Depression, and what that could portend for the decade ahead of us. We are now almost five years removed from the start of the pandemic, and it’s becoming clear that what looked at first like a V-shaped recovery has proven to be a period of slow growth and declining productivity.

We’ve gone from the heyday of the zero interest-rate economy, when money was cheap and easy to come by, to supply chain disruptions, inflation, high interest rates and major conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

People are increasingly distrustful, frustrated and angry, eager to blame their ills on politicians, the media and corporate executives—making the road ahead even less predictable.

The Logic Summit 2023 in pictures

By The Logic

Some of this will come to a head in just three weeks, with a U.S. election that could—and I say this without hyperbole—change the course of history.

At an event a few weeks ago I was seated next to a world-renowned historian, and I couldn’t resist asking him what direction he thought the world was heading in. His answer: it is 1914 all over again and we are on the brink of a global calamity.

All of this to say: good luck with your 2025 budget forecasts.

Amid this uncertainty, we are convening some 250 newsmakers and thought leaders—including some of the biggest names in Canadian business—for The Logic Summit, an intimate half-day gathering in Toronto on Oct. 28. It will feature live journalism and candid discussions about some of the most pressing questions facing Canada today.

Tickets are already over 95 per cent sold out.

Our goal for this year’s edition is to help you think through the challenges you and your business will face in the year ahead, via interviews and conversations with some of the country’s leading decision makers.

We’ll bring The Logic’s award-winning journalism to the stage, as our reporters and editors talk to executives from major companies including Loblaw, Microsoft, CPP Investments and SRTX; to leaders at startups such as Cohere and Ada; and to policymakers shaping the playing field, like Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem.

You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to mingle with each other.

Among the themes we’ll explore:

  • The implications of the U.S. election and the next election in Canada
  • How corporate Canada can thrive despite political and economic uncertainty
  • How to lead through a global polycrisis
  • Is it only about ambition? How Canadian companies can compete on the world stage
  • What role does innovation play in Canada’s economic growth?
  • Where is Canada’s AI strategy?
  • Protecting against cyber threats: Cybersecurity and geopolitical instability

Some of the incredible speakers:

  • Galen Weston, chairman and CEO, George Weston Ltd., and Chairman, Loblaw Companies Ltd.
  • Tiff Macklem, governor, Bank of Canada
  • Isabelle Hudon, president and CEO, BDC
  • Nick Frosst, co-founder, Cohere
  • Katherine Homuth, CEO, SRTX
  • Michael Katchen, co-founder and CEO, Wealthsimple
  • Priti Singh, senior managing director and chief risk officer, CPP Investments
  • Parinaz Sobhani, managing partner and head of AI, Sagard
  • Mike Murchison, CEO, Ada
  • Carolyn Dewar, senior partner, McKinsey & Company
  • Daniel Lagacé-Roy, associate professor, Royal Military College of Canada
  • John Weigelt, national technology officer, Microsoft Canada
  • Jennifer Quaid, executive director, Canadian Cyber Threat Exchange
  • Konata Lake, partner, Torys LLP
  • Althea Wishloff, general partner, Raven Indigenous Capital Partners
  • Shuman Ghosemajumder, CEO, Reken

And there are many more.

We’re immensely grateful to our presenting sponsor Sun Life and platinum sponsors BMO, Mastercard, Scale AI and Terrestar, along with our supporting sponsors Power Corp., CIFAR, IDA Ireland, Osler and Edgewater. Thank you for helping make this event possible. At a time when trust in journalism is at a low point, these incredible partners have entrusted us to do what we do best.

If you’d like to get your company involved, it’s not too late. Email Ariel Lepper-Walker, our director of brand partnerships.

We can’t wait to welcome you.
