It’s been a challenging half-decade for business.
A month into the COVID-19 pandemic, Kenneth Whyte penned a column in The Logic that looked at how the 1929 stock market crash led to the Great Depression, and what that could portend for the decade ahead of us. We are now almost five years removed from the start of the pandemic, and it’s becoming clear that what looked at first like a V-shaped recovery has proven to be a period of slow growth and declining productivity.
We’ve gone from the heyday of the zero interest-rate economy, when money was cheap and easy to come by, to supply chain disruptions, inflation, high interest rates and major conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
People are increasingly distrustful, frustrated and angry, eager to blame their ills on politicians, the media and corporate executives—making the road ahead even less predictable.
Some of this will come to a head in just three weeks, with a U.S. election that could—and I say this without hyperbole—change the course of history.
At an event a few weeks ago I was seated next to a world-renowned historian, and I couldn’t resist asking him what direction he thought the world was heading in. His answer: it is 1914 all over again and we are on the brink of a global calamity.
All of this to say: good luck with your 2025 budget forecasts.
Amid this uncertainty, we are convening some 250 newsmakers and thought leaders—including some of the biggest names in Canadian business—for The Logic Summit, an intimate half-day gathering in Toronto on Oct. 28. It will feature live journalism and candid discussions about some of the most pressing questions facing Canada today.
Tickets are already over 95 per cent sold out.
