Users in mainland China will no longer be able to access Yahoo services as of Nov. 1. In a statement, the U.S. technology company said the decision comes amid an “increasingly challenging business and legal environment in China.” (The Wall Street Journal)
Talking point: Yahoo is the second major U.S. tech firm to leave China within a month after Microsoft-owned LinkedIn pulled out of the country in mid-October. Yahoo’s exit comes as China’s Personal Information Protection Law, which curbs tech firms’ data collection, took effect on Monday. Both Yahoo and LinkedIn had faced challenges operating in China for years. Although the U.S companies have long struggled between adhering to censorship rules in China while standing by a commitment to a free and open internet, recent regulatory crackdowns on tech companies have made it more challenging for them to operate in China. Meanwhile, Epic Games also announced this week that it’s closing its Chinese version of the popular game Fortnite in the country.
