Talking point: G20 finance ministers and central bankers met in Durban, where they issued their first joint communique since U.S. President Donald Trump was elected. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent skipped the meeting, and sent an undersecretary in his stead. The joint statement stressed that the rules established by the World Trade Organization are an integral part of world trade, though they acknowledged the organization needs reform. Former prime minister Justin Trudeau accused Trump of violating those rules when he launched a trade war with Canada in March. Champagne said he wanted the statement to restore business and consumer confidence, project stability and encourage investment.
