In an application filed to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on Monday, Uber claims Mayor Olivia Chow and the Toronto city council failed to give proper notice of new rules limiting the number of ride-hail drivers in the city at existing levels. It asked the court to cancel the cap. (The Logic)
Talking point: The city passed the surprise motion in October as part of an effort to curb car emissions and congestion. In its lawsuit, Uber claims its “customer base, goodwill and revenue” would suffer under the licensing limit, causing the company to be “irreparably harmed.” “Mayor Chow is making life harder and less affordable for Torontonians by increasing wait times and costs and limiting an economic opportunity,” said Uber spokesperson Keerthana Rang in an emailed statement. Naomi Ahmad, spokesperson for the City of Toronto, told The Logic it’s reviewing the lawsuit and “cannot provide any further comment as the matter is before the courts.”
