The alleged target, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, was a friend of Harpreet Singh Nijjar, who was murdered in B.C. in June; they were allies in Sikhs for Justice, which argues for a referendum on separating Punjab from India. According to the Financial Times, Pannun was targeted in the United States, where authorities got wind of the plot, issued their own (private) warning to India and filed sealed criminal charges. Talking point: Like Nijjar, Pannun is accused by the Indian government of terrorism; he drew cross-partisan condemnation here in September for a video calling for Indian Hindus to leave Canada, and warned Sikhs not to fly on Air India on Nov. 19. As general counsel of Sikhs for Justice, he called for India to be broken up as a country in a Sept. 18 statement headlined “Death to India.” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement in Nijjar’s killing, which led India to stop processing e-visa applications for Canadians wanting to make business or tourism visits; it began accepting those applications again Wednesday.
