Talking point: Eight other states, as well as the District of Columbia, are making similar allegations in separate claims. A Meta spokesperson told The Washington Post that Meta is “disappointed … the attorneys general have chosen this path” over cooperating to create better industry standards. Whistleblower Frances Haugen raised alarm bells about Facebook in September 2021, alleging the technology giant knew about problems affecting children and other groups, but failed to fix them. In May, the U.S. surgeon general warned about the risks of social media on youth, citing mental health concerns. The coalition of states said it is also investigating TikTok over similar concerns.
