Toronto-based Genesys Capital will manage the VC fund, with the University of Toronto and McMaster University contributing up to $8 million and $5 million, respectively. Talking point: The Genesys University Seed Fund will primarily invest in life-sciences startups spun out of research done at U of T and McMaster. It’s the first time either university has backed a venture capital fund, the schools’ presidents told The Globe and Mail. Their investments come from revenue from the universities’ tech transfer offices, which license intellectual property their academics generate. The universities join a growing list of Canadian post-secondary institutions launching or supporting VC funds to capture more commercial value from research they fund.
