Talking point: The Trump administration had been pushing London for a total ban, with the president, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo all issuing fresh warnings in the last week. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is reportedly keen on the benefits faster internet offers consumers and the local tech sector, and carriers have told his government that banning Huawei’s cheaper equipment would slow down 5G deployment. But the move could hurt Britain’s upcoming negotiations on a post-Brexit U.S. trade deal. Johnson’s decision could also set a precedent for other governments on Huawei. Canadian Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said Tuesday that Ottawa is studying the British move. Last week, he said it will weigh both economic and geopolitical considerations. The former likely includes trade restrictions on canola, the latter the two Canadians that China continues to detain.
