Talking point: The probe into misleading online reviews is one angle in a series of investigations in Europe and North America examining Big Tech’s dominance in the spaces they occupy. The CMA itself is carrying out a broader program looking at new regulations for digital companies. Last week, the regulator recently launched a study into Apple’s and Google’s smartphone platforms, describing their dominance as an “effective duopoly.” It’s also overseeing Google’s plans to remove user-tracking technology from its Chrome browser. Earlier this month, the CMA and the European Commission opened antitrust investigations into whether Facebook uses data from users who buy ads on its platform to unfairly compete against them.
