Prime Minister Justin Trudeau once again invited former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney to join his political team and talks are progressing, according to The Globe and Mail. The former central banker has been touted as a possible successor to Trudeau as leader of the Liberal party, but has remained noncommittal about his political intentions. (The Globe and Mail)
Talking point: Earlier this fall, Trudeau appointed Carney to head a one-man task force to help shape Liberal fiscal policy in time for the next election. The prospect of a significant cabinet shuffle has hung over Ottawa since October, when a handful of cabinet ministers announced they won’t run for re-election and, a month later, former employment minister Randy Boissonnault stepped down. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has been weathering speculation—and criticism—about blowing the target she set on the government’s deficit spending. She’s also been tapped to lead the government’s response to president-elect Donald Trump’s tariff threats south of the border, which could pave the way for a vacancy at the head of the Finance Department.
