Talking point: In its report, the American engineering firm said that while hyperloop technology “shows promise,” the estimated cost per kilometre associated with building the systems—along with uncertainties around whether the technology actually works—makes it a bad choice relative to other transportation methods like high-speed rail. Aecom published its report a day after the Alberta government announced its intentions to study the viability of working with Toronto-based TransPod to build a hyperloop between Calgary and Edmonton. TransPod CEO Sebastien Gendron told The Logic the report overlooked more recent research about the technology from his firm and competitors that he said could have lowered Aecom’s estimated costs. “All their concerns will be answered in the full feasibility study we will perform with Alberta Transportation, a study I would like to be finished by next spring.”
