Talking point: Canadian governments have pledged billions of dollars to build a domestic EV supply chain. To do that the industry needs nickel, a raw component of EV batteries. But Canadian mines can’t keep pace with the needs of manufacturing plants. Ottawa anticipates mineral imports from Indonesia to surge 42 per cent by 2040 as a result of the deal. Canadian nickel executives worry about the pressure that will put on the domestic industry. In April, former finance minister Chrystia Freeland accused Indonesia and China of flooding the international market with nickel and other critical minerals to undercut Canadian producers, and said Canada and its allies were weighing a potential response.
