A federal Conservative government would get high-speed internet to every corner of the country by 2025, party leader Erin O’Toole said Monday. That’s five years sooner than the Liberals have pledged to do it, on a timetable that would see 98 per cent of Canadians able to hook up to broadband by 2026. (The Logic)
Talking point: In an announcement in Belleville, Ont., that could have served as a kickoff for an election campaign that hasn’t yet formally begun, O’Toole also promised funding for rural infrastructure and to make judges consider at sentencing whether an offence was directed at a person or property far from emergency services. Also Monday, Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government announced a child-care deal with Manitoba—the sixth province to sign on for federal aid for $10-a-day care—and MPs made funding announcements from St. John’s, N.L., to Yellowknife. And, the NDP’s Jagmeet Singh began a swing through Atlantic Canada.
