The United States cannot dictate terms of trade talks, says prime minister

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada should not make any more concessions for the sake of trade talks with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. His chief negotiator Janice Charette says the U.S. has “pocketed” those concessions, including Canada’s decision to roll back the digital sales tax and make major investments in border security. Canada wants to see some “mutuality” in return, she said. (The Logic)

Talking point: Radio-Canada cited sources claiming the U.S. is demanding more concessions from Canada before beginning talks on the next phase of the North American trade pact. The administration has already named several irritants, including Canada’s cloud sovereignty push and its Online Streaming Act, which requires major streaming companies to carry and pay for Canadian content. Charette said she expects the overall trade pact will include Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, but bilateral agreements will likely be tacked on, like a “snap-on Lego” piece, she said.
