Talking point: The bureau alleges the food-delivery company has misled users about its prices for a decade and collected nearly $1 billion in mandatory fees. Those fees are often represented as taxes, when they’re actually charged at the discretion of the company, the bureau said. It’s illegal in Canada to advertise prices that omit mandatory fees, unless those extra charges are imposed by the government, like sales tax. DoorDash argues all of its fees are clearly labelled and disclosed when users make an order, pointing to a disclaimer about service fees at the top of every store page on the platform. The company feels unfairly singled out by the Competition Bureau, DoorDash said in a statement. The San Francisco-based company reported $10.7 billion in revenue last year.
