The Vancouver-telecom attempted to influence political leaders in an effort to “kill, slow and shape” Rogers’s proposed $26-billion takeover of Shaw, according to a presentation made to Telus’s board on Aug. 4 that became public during the Competition Tribunal’s review. (The Globe and Mail)
Talking point: Project Fox included trying to convince Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada that Quebecor should not be allowed to acquire Shaw’s wireless licenses, capitalizing on Rogers’s July outage as an example of security risks, and offering suggested talking points for NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, who has supported blocking the merger. Rogers and Shaw announced the proposed deal in March 2021, but the Competition Bureau objects to combining their cellphone and wireless internet businesses. Mediation didn’t help, and Rogers and Shaw signed a deal in August to sell Freedom Mobile to Quebecor should the merger be approved. Competition hearings began earlier this month.
