Talking point: It’s still unclear if or when Canada’s Supercharger network might be available to other EVs. But if it was, it would provide more fast, high-powered charging options for EV drivers, as companies like General Motors work on building out their own networks. Of the 1,094 EV public fast chargers mapped by Natural Resources Canada, 105 were Tesla chargers. Canada has lagged behind early adopters like Norway, which in 2019 had 1,700 charging stations per million residents, compared with Canada’s 290 per million residents. A survey this spring for the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association and Global Automakers of Canada found that 47 per cent of consumers who do not plan to purchase an EV cited a lack of public charging infrastructure as one of their reasons.
