Sonos claims Google is infringing five wireless-audio patents. Google denied all wrongdoing and said it will defend itself. (The Verge)
Talking point: Sonos’s lawsuit comes one day before Google’s expected announcement of a new Nest smart speaker and Chromecast. This is the second time Sonos has taken Google to court, but the first time it’s filed in the federal court for the Western District of Texas. The state saw 747 patent complaints in the first half of 2020, twice as many as any other state this year. The Texas court is popular in part due to a Supreme Court ruling requiring firms to bring patent lawsuits only in jurisdictions which they operate, and many of them have Austin offices. Sonos is hoping this court will move its case along relatively quickly—or in about two years.
