The Brampton, Ont.-based retailer said it is taking over all of the U.S. mattress-in-a-box company’s Canadian assets. It will receive a US$4.5-million marketing transaction fee from Casper over four years, as well as warrants that would convert to a roughly one per cent stake in the company once exercised. Talking point: Sleep Country already has mattress-in-a-box brands in its arsenal. In May 2017, it launched in-house brand Bloom as a response to popular new e-commerce startups, such as Casper. In November 2018, it acquired a competitor in the space, Endy. When the acquisition was fully completed with a $25-million performance payout in early 2021, Sleep Country called the deal “a spectacular success” as Endy surpassed all the metrics that had been set. Prior to today’s announcement, Sleep Country was already the sole retail partner for Casper in the country.
