U.S. President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that re-opening the Strait of Hormuz would be simple if allies would only help the United States do it—presumably by attacking missile and drone sites in Iran or escorting civilian ships out of the Persian Gulf in the face of Iranian threats. (The Logic)
Talking point: Global oil prices rose again as captains and shipping companies continued refusing to sail tankers through the strait. Besides oil and natural gas, Iran’s closure of the strait in response to U.S.-Israeli attacks is choking off supplies of sulphur (needed for fertilizer and extracting and processing critical minerals like nickel, copper and cobalt) and helium (used in semiconductors and medical imaging machines). Canada, several other NATO members and Japan jointly said they’re ready “to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage through the strait,” without specifying what those might be. – David R.
