The Ottawa-based commerce company will lease nearly 36,000 square feet in a building located in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighbourhood, a source told Bloomberg, paying more than average in the area at over US$100 a square foot. Talking point: The tech company in May 2020 declared itself “digital-by-default.” Late last year, Shopify backed out of its plans for a 254,000-square-foot mega-office at The Well, a sprawling mixed-use development in Toronto’s downtown core. A spokesperson said it would keep a physical footprint in the major cities it was already in, including Montreal, Vancouver and New York. The company has office and commercial leases in several countries—Canada, the U.S., Singapore and Ireland, among others—with up to 14 years remaining on its terms, according to its most recent earnings report.
