Talking point: Shopify has been working on the new system for several years, said Arpan Podduturi, vice-president of product, in an email to The Logic. The device costs US$399, is available for pre-order Tuesday and is expected to ship to merchants in time for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It doesn’t intend to discontinue its existing point-of-sale hardware, which it first introduced in 2013 and revamped in 2020. The company said it developed the product to help its merchants “adapt to the changing commerce landscape.” It said sales made by its merchants using the company’s current POS hardware grew nearly 80 per cent in the first quarter of the year, indicating a return to offline retail.
