Frontier, a group of companies that funds carbon removal projects, said that Stripe, Google, Shopify, Salesforce, H&M and Anthropic are among the backers of a new US$915-million funding pool. (The Logic)
Talking point: Frontier previously said it would spend US$925 million between 2022 and 2030, but has nearly doubled that commitment. The group funds startups worldwide—including in Halifax, Montreal, Saskatoon and Vancouver—that make technologies to capture tonnes of carbon, offsetting the corporate backers’ emissions. The new funding comes as tech companies try to get ahead of concerns about data centres’ environmental impact, though some environmental groups remain skeptical of carbon capture technologies. This time, Frontier said, it will be focused on a narrower set of startups with strong technology and policy-driven demand. Canada is one jurisdiction with the needed policies, the group said.
