Transport Minister Anita Anand cleared Santa Claus to enter Canadian airspace after a test run earlier this month took North American Aerospace Defense Command by surprise. (The Logic)
Talking point: Claus submitted his pre-clearance forms and assured the ministry that his reindeer are healthy and ready to fly before his Christmas Eve journey across the globe. Canadian airforce members had to unexpectedly scramble earlier this month when a unique aircraft pulled by reindeer with no tail number was detected over a mountainous region of Western Canada. It turned out to be Claus doing a daytime test run. In addition to protecting North American airspace, NORAD has been tasked the last 69 years with tracking Claus’s Christmas Eve travels around the world using defence support satellites. United States president-elect Donald Trump has urged Canada and other allies to bolster their military capabilities and increase defence spending, or risk the U.S. pulling out of formal alliances.
