Nearly half of Canadians are feeling the strain of increased mortgage and rent payments and report being “very concerned,” Statistics Canada’s most recent social survey shows. Those concerns have crossed over into serious household financial problems for one-third of people surveyed. Meanwhile, nine per cent of people said they don’t have enough bedrooms and one in 10 said their home isn’t in good condition. (The Logic)

Talking point: People under the age of 35 are far more likely to be concerned about finding the right housing at the right price, Statistics Canada said. The country needs to build 3.5 million units by 2031, University of Ottawa’s Smart Prosperity Institute estimated earlier this year, to keep up with population growth and close the existing housing gap. Ottawa has since announced plans to spur home building and recently scaled back immigration targets to ease demand. Even so, the parliamentary budget officer estimated last week that Canada will be 658,000 homes short by 2030.
