Premiers want a stern response if president-elect Donald Trump pushes ahead with 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods and proposed restrictions on exports that the U.S. relies on, the finance minister said after a meeting with them Wednesday evening. Those include critical minerals, Freeland said. Ontario’s Doug Ford said his province will stop exporting electricity to neighbouring states if necessary. (The Logic)
Talking point: The premiers aren’t united. Alberta’s Danielle Smith said Thursday she would never support restrictions on exports of oil and gas, and is against retaliatory tariffs because all tariffs hurt consumers. Ford said the same about the pain tariffs cause, but said, “We can’t sit back and roll over.” Premiers are gathering in Toronto Sunday and Monday for meetings Ford will chair, where they’ll have a chance to try to find common ground.
