Talking point: “Typical Trudeau policy. Tax the builders and spend without return,” Desmarais wrote. “No wonder our economy is struggling.” Desmarais’ frustration echoes comments by CIBC chief executive Victor Dodig, who defended the sector on the company’s earnings call last week. They are also striking in light of Power Corp.’s longstanding ties to members of the Liberal Party. Former prime ministers Paul Martin, Jean Chrétien and Pierre Trudeau all served in senior roles at Power Corp. or were on its board, and the company has been criticized for being too cozy with Canada’s political leaders. Sagard declined The Logic’s request for comment.
