In a now-deleted LinkedIn post, the head of Power Corporation-arm Sagard Holdings wrote that Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s proposal to raise taxes on financial institutions would harm the sector and put Canada’s prosperity at risk. (The Logic)

Tax the builders and spend without return,” Desmarais wrote. “No wonder our economy is struggling.” Desmarais’ frustration echoes comments by CIBC chief executive Victor Dodig, who defended the sector on the company’s earnings call last week. They are also striking in light of Power Corp.’s longstanding ties to members of the Liberal Party. Former prime ministers Paul Martin, Jean Chrétien and Pierre Trudeau all served in senior roles at Power Corp. or were on its board, and the company has been criticized for being too cozy with Canada’s political leaders. Sagard declined The Logic’s request for  comment.
