Altman is in discussions with at least one OpenAI board member, Adam D’Angelo, sources told Bloomberg, with one saying some of the firm’s investors are also participating in the talks. One outcome could be Altman returning as a director on a transitional board, according to a source. (Bloomberg)
Talking point: The news comes after reports the company is in intense negotiations to mend the damage done since his firing Friday. Since then, at least 95 per cent of roughly 770 staff have threatened to quit unless the board resigns, and some of the firm’s investors, who had no say in the decision, may sue the board. Microsoft, reportedly OpenAI’s largest shareholder, has said the startup’s governance needs to change, whether Altman, co-founder Greg Brockman and other disgruntled staff join Microsoft or not. OpenAI’s now four-person board—who reportedly approached rival Anthropic about a merger after letting Altman go—includes Ilya Sutskever, who has since publicly flip-flopped on the firing. Two more need to change their minds for the ousted co-founders to return.
