Talking point: Public Works Minister Joël Lightbound said the government cannot continue to bail out the postal service indefinitely, as it loses roughly $10 million per day. The projected savings are still well short of the $1.3-billion loss Canada Post accumulated in 2024. The government has asked the postal service to come up with a plan to make up the difference. An industrial commission of inquiry recommended the changes in May, and concluded that Canada Post is effectively bankrupt, and that self-sufficiency is, at best, a long-term project. Meanwhile, Canada Post is still embroiled in a prolonged labour dispute that threatens to further disrupt deliveries.
