Talking point: Once completed, the Canadian lunar utility rover will move cargo and help with lunar construction to support having astronauts living on the moon’s surface. That future is still a ways away, though. The 18-month contracts are for “preparatory studies,” which will look at different options for the rover, including its potential size. Peter Visscher, the vice-president of rovers at Ottawa-based Mission Control, said the project is Canada’s most ambitious rover project to date. The vehicle will need to be able to survive at least 10 years and at temperatures as low as -200 C. The technology could be adapted for future missions to Mars or elsewhere in deep space.
