The Waterloo-based software company is eliminating the roles of 1,600 employees, but plans to “add back” 1,000 people in specific roles, BetaKit reports. The cuts are part of its larger plan rolled out in July 2024 which involved reducing 1,200 roles and adding 800 new ones. Over the past two years, the net reductions have been 2,000 employees. Talking point: OpenText—which has nearly 23,000 employees worldwide, according to LinkedIn—is shuffling employees to hone in on AI services, which will become a “number 1 priority,” CEO Mark Barrenechea told employees in an April email. New employees at the company will also need to be well-versed in AI. Other tech companies, including Shopify, have shifted to a policy that requires employees to demonstrate that AI can’t do a job before requesting more resources from the company.
