The artificial intelligence company is acquiring AI consulting firm Tomoro, and will work with 19 investment firms to deploy engineers within client companies. Talking point: It’s one of the highest-profile pushes yet in the field of “forward-deployed engineers,” who, much like traditional consultants, embed within companies to help them revamp their businesses. Enterprise tech giants like Microsoft and IBM have long sent consultants to set up new technology for key clients, and smaller AI companies have started doing the same in recent months. OpenAI’s version of this work has kicked up considerable buzz and raked in over US$4 billion in initial investment, including US$500 million from Brookfield alone, which aims to deploy OpenAI’s tools in its portfolio of companies.
