The US$500-billion compute consortium hasn’t yet agreed on any deals for new facilities, and the lead partners have different views on where to build, sources told The Wall Street Journal. SoftBank and OpenAI told the publication they are working on projects in several U.S. states. (The Wall Street Journal)
Talking point: OpenAI promised that the firm would start rolling out US$100 billion in infrastructure “immediately” when it launched Stargate in January. But the partners have reportedly scaled back their plans for this year to one new, smaller facility. Other Stargate data centres being built to serve OpenAI’s compute needs are moving forward, including a US$11.6-billion site in Texas. The ChatGPT maker has also recently done deals for AI infrastructure with CoreWeave and Oracle.
