Talking point: Getting a road to the Ring of Fire is vital to Ontario’s ambition to unearth the wealth of critical minerals in the region. Once the project is complete though, there are still hundreds of kilometres of road to build. The plan is to eventually connect remote First Nations communities in the Ring of Fire to the Trans-Canada highway, so mined minerals can be transported by road year round. For now, the only way to reach the communities is by plane or winter ice road. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to announce the first set of major projects that will get a fast-tracked treatment from Ottawa on Thursday.
