The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) levied the penalty against Pickering Casino Resort operator Great Canadian Entertainment (GCE) for failing to adequately monitor high-risk customers and report suspicious activity. (The Logic)
Talking point: The AGCO’s fine comes amid a broad crackdown as Canada works to shed its reputation for being soft on financial criminals. In 2025, the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (Fintrac) launched an enforcement blitz on casinos, initiating more than 50 investigations in the sector. Fintrac spokesperson Erica Constant told The Logic at the time that the agency increased its scrutiny of casinos because the sector is “highly vulnerable to money laundering and terrorist financing threats.” The AGCO also fined GCE $120,000 in June for using unauthorized gambling software at four casinos, and $151,000 last year for allegedly failing to prevent minors from gambling.
