Sault Ste. Marie-based Village Media will launch 15 newsrooms in the U.S., funded with US$5 million from the Knight Foundation, a Miami-based arts and journalism non-profit. (The Logic)
Talking point: It’s rare for the foundation to fund groups outside the U.S., but Village Media has demonstrated it can build “impactful and sustainable” local news organizations, Knight’s CEO Maribel Pérez Wadsworth said in a press release. Village Media runs publications like The Trillium and Milton Today, and licenses technology to sites like The Albertan and North Shore News, as well as two publications in Texas and Georgia. It will start its expansion in Wisconsin, and is eyeing Pennsylvania and Illinois next. Americans and Canadians both rank local papers and stations among their most trusted news sources, a 2022 survey found, but Canadians expressed higher levels of trust. New Zealand’s Stuff Group also announced in June that it would use Village Media’s technology to launch a local news network for Kiwis.
