Speaking at the 2021 Mobile World Congress, the SpaceX CEO said his satellite-internet project would provide coverage “everywhere except the poles” by August. He added that it will grow from about 70,000 users in 12 countries, to serving a few hundred thousand users within 12 months. (The Logic, CNET)
Talking point: Starlink got the signoff to launch in Canada last year from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (and managed to impress an editor familiar to The Logic). The technology promises to help connect communities that are underserved by traditional high-speed internet services, a problem in many areas of Canada. Still, it’s an expensive task: Musk joked that many companies with similar goals have gone bankrupt. He said it would take US$5 billion to US$10 billion to get Starlink to cash-flow positive and the rest would be invested over time.
