A record number of people (and some bots) virtually lined up for a shot to purchase one of about 10,000 “packs” of blockchain-based basketball-video highlights at US$99, one day after Vancouver-based Dapper Labs postponed the drop due to concerns over bot activity. (The Logic)
Talking point: Dapper keeps smashing records with NBA Top Shot, which has been a massive hit for the company since it opened its beta version to the public in October 2020. After Dapper issues the packs, users can resell the video highlights inside, called “Moments,” on a secondary marketplace. It’s part of a larger trend of blockchain-based digital collectibles, with auction house Christie’s getting in on the action by placing its first fully digital work up for auction this week by artist Beeple. NBA Top Shot has made US$206 million in sales in the past 30 days, and almost US$7 million in the past 24 hours alone, according to Cryptoslam. The top-selling Moment went for US$208,000 Monday.
