Health Canada authorized the first tests in humans of the company’s vaccine against Bundibugyo virus disease, the cause of the ongoing Ebola outbreak, the largest ever in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Phase 1 clinical trials test pharmaceuticals in healthy people, mainly to look for unexpected side effects and harms. Moderna said Tuesday it has already begun the trial. (The Logic)
Talking point: Another potential Bundibugyo vaccine is in trials in the United Kingdom but Moderna’s is the first using the mRNA technology that proved itself against COVID-19. The Public Health Agency of Canada works with Moderna on mRNA vaccines and drugs, to support production at the company’s factory near Montreal. The arrangement is particularly important to the company given the Trump administration’s skepticism toward mRNA technology; although Moderna has huge financial reserves thanks to its COVID-19 vaccine and numerous potential products in its pipeline, it lost about US$800 million in its most recent quarter.
