Talking point: Competitor Google announced last week that it will no longer display news in search results in Canada, citing the just-passed Bill C-18. The new law requires the operators of online platforms to negotiate or be arbitrated into deals with publishers whose content is posted on their sites. It’ll fall to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to say which firms will be subject to the new rules. But only Meta and Google-parent Alphabet exceed the thresholds the government is currently contemplating, Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez told a Senate committee last month. If the regulator plays along, Bing could keep news links without paying out to publishers under the new law. Meanwhile, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar said lawmakers should stand up to Alphabet and Meta as the firms move to remove news in response to Bill C-18; she’s sponsoring similar legislation in the U.S.
