Talking point: The company’s latest results come as some of its frontline retail workers in the Greater Toronto Area continue to strike. Employees walked off the job on July 29 after rejecting a tentative collective agreement, and are calling for stable hours, better pay, and health and sick leave benefits, according to Unifor, a union whose Local 414 chapter represents 3,700 Metro workers. Unifor said in a tweet Wednesday that “it’s time for workers to get their fair share of … Metro’s record profits.” The company is “clearly disappointed with the current labour dispute,” CEO Eric La Flèche said in a statement, and it looks forward to a resolution that will re-open the 27 impacted stores “while ensuring the long-term competitiveness of our company.”
