The provincial transit agency removed its electric vehicle-chargers from Go station parking lots across the GTHA in November 2018. Metrolinx clarified that it was the transit agency’s decision to remove the chargers, not the provincial government’s. Metrolinx found that the 24 chargers were used less than once per day on average. “We found low demand for the charging stations, and the program’s costs were greater than any revenue,” reads a company statement. Talking point: While these chargers were getting little use the number of chargers Canada-wide increased rapidly. At the end of 2017, there were 23,620 electric vehicles in Canada, with only 5,841 charging stations. Today, the number of charging stations currently operating across Canada is over 9,500, according to the CAA. In 2015, former Ontario premier Kathleen Wynne announced the $20-million pilot program at the Paris Agreement climate change conference, and it was the first allocation from the $325-million Green Investment Fund. All of the fund’s programs have since concluded.
