Meta is pressing for new federal rules in Canada that would make Google and Apple responsible for verifying the age of social media users, rather than platforms like Meta’s Facebook and Instagram. (Politico, The Logic)
Talking point: Meta Canada’s director of public policy Rachel Curran has been lobbying Ottawa to include the new rules in the government’s upcoming online safety legislation, which is expected to be tabled next year. She told the House of Commons Heritage Committee last month that Meta does not want to collect personal ID from users, and that Apple and Google already receive reliable information about a users’ age when they set up their phones. Meta’s apps can communicate with the app stores to make sure users have an age-appropriate experience, she said. The idea has been picked up in several U.S. states, and Republican Rep. John James has introduced a bill before Congress to do the same federally.
