The provincial grant is helping the venerable space company build a new headquarters and “Space Robotics Centre of Excellence” in Brampton, Ont., northwest of Toronto, a project whose total value Ontario pegs at $100 million. It’s also where MDA plans to build the next-generation Canadarm3 for the Lunar Gateway space station led by NASA. (The Logic)
Talking point: The new Canadarm, infused with artificial intelligence so it can operate on an automated platform 400,000 kilometres from Earth, is Canada’s major contribution to the moon-orbiter project. Formally, MDA isn’t yet guaranteed to see the Canadarm3 through to completion, though it’s already done two phases of preparatory and design work and today announced it’s won the next phase, as well. It’s a $269-million contract to complete the design and begin procuring hardware, in concert with “Canadian companies from coast to coast.”
