The Montreal autotech startup, which filed for bankruptcy protection in April 2022, specialized in the hybrid retrofitting of garbage trucks and other heavy-duty “stop-start” vehicles to reduce fuel consumption. The terms of the acquisition weren’t announced. Martinrea is acquiring Effenco’s wirelessly charged, fully electric propulsion system for heavy-duty trucks, which it launched in 2021, among other assets. (The Logic)
Talking point: This isn’t the first time Vaughan, Ont.-based Martinrea has taken an interest in Quebec intellectual property. As my colleague Anita wrote in June 2021, the auto-parts supplier is an investor in NanoXplore, a Montreal-based purveyor of graphene, a conductive material used in computer chip production. Effenco raised $10 million in Series A funding from the Business Development Bank of Canada, Investissement Québec and CEO and co-founder David Arsenault in September 2020.
