Among the notable moves: the Bank of Canada’s executive director of policy Nick Leswick will take over as deputy minister of finance early next year, Carney announced. (The Logic)
Talking point: Leswick was Privy Council Clerk Michael Sabia’s second in command a few years ago, when the now-clerk held the top job at finance. Christiane Fox, the deputy clerk of the Privy Council since January 2024, will become deputy minister of defence as the prime minister prepares to launch a defence industrial strategy in the new year. Most of the appointments include current or former public servants, but Carney’s pick for deputy attorney general comes as a surprise: Court of Appeal Judge Marie-Josée Hogue will take the job, after leading a federal inquiry into foreign interference that tabled its findings earlier this year. Another outsider John McArthur, senior fellow at Washington D.C.-based think tank Brookings, will be brought in to advise cabinet on economic policy.
