Talking point: This is the “largest evacuation Manitoba will have seen in most people’s living memory,” Premier Wab Kinew told reporters, as more than 17,000 people were forced to leave their homes. The order comes as Canada’s wildfire protection costs have risen sharply over the last decade, averaging between $800 million and $1.4 billion annually. Wildfires could also threaten major operations including the Alamos Gold mine in the northwest of the province, although the company has not yet publicly said it would shut down production. Meanwhile, smaller fires in Alberta could stifle oil output. Calgary oilsands company Cenovus recently removed non-essential workers from its Foster Creek development due to a nearby blaze in central Alberta.
